Women's Painted Furniture Book
$60.00
Betsy Krieg Salm is an ornamental artist who has spent decades deducing the materials and techniques of women's painted furniture. Misnomered as 'women's' it would be more apt to describe it as 'schoolgirl art'. During the late 1700's until the mid-nineteenth century, academies teaching young women the fine skills expected of an educated woman incorporated painting on wood as a requisite skill almost as valuable as needlework. Betsy traces the history of this art from England to the shores of a new country, showing the popularity of the style and its relationship to its needlework cousin. The technique was most often used to decorate artist boxes and fantastic sewing tables. Trade cards, advertisements and examples from well known schools such as the vaunted Mrs. Rowsen's Academy of Boston of needlework fame are used to explain this art. The collections of private individuals and museums are shown in the book as well as Betsy's fantastic interpretations. There are chapters devoted to the link to needlework, the methods and materials of the art, as well as a fascinating chapter showing the process to clean, restore and conserve an original. Betsy has spent years teasing out the history of this forgotten art form, her love for it is evident in her writing. If you own a piece of Betsy's work, however small, your collection and understanding of it is not complete without this companion book.

Scissor's Stands
Betsy has come up with a new needlework accessory - scissors' stands for your work table. Each is turned from a different wood and then painted with motifs typical of schoolgirl ink and watercolor on wood. This technique was taught in girl's academies on the East Coast as one of the important accomplishments of young women. The existing examples show a strong relationship to motifs on 19th century samplers being worked in the same schools. If you own a box or threadwinders by Betsy, these scissors' stands are a very useful compliment, keeping the points safe in the center hole and easy to find.

Each stand is unique, painted by Betsy to compliment the wood and turning. Between 2"-3" high, they vary from 1.25"-2" in diameter and fit embroidery scissors. Betsy is busy finishing a book on this aspect of schoolgirl art, a book I am eagerly anticipating, therefore her painting time is limited and these stands will be limited in nature.
