$17.50 Kit SOLD OUT
(Includes donation of $7.50 to Fashion Museum, Bath & North East
Somerset Council to help rehouse 17th century glove collection)
Instructions for this Needlework Nibble are available in the Web
Projects section of the website.
This kit is an exciting venture in fund raising for museums. The piece
is based upon a small detail on a glove (BATMC-GLO-23342A) owned by the
Gloves Collection Trust housed in the Fashion Museum, Bath, UK. The
Gloves Collection Trust was set up by the Worshipful Company of Glovers.
The museum is in the process of raising funds to rehouse all of the 17th
century gloves (totaling over 150) in new conservation storage boxes with
easy access stands to both support the pieces as well as allow for easier
viewing by visitors to the appointments room. Every two kits sold will
fund the materials needed to rehouse a set of gloves. $7.50 of each kit
will go to the Fashion Museum, Bath & North East Somerset Council and be
designated for this purpose.
The project is faithful to the original, including the majority of the
materials used. This opportunity came about at the same time as the
first production run of blue silk gimp (silk wrapped silk core thread)
from Golden Threads came about. Therefore the piece can be worked as
seen on the historic example. While this new, exciting thread is
being made for Thistle Threads classes, this is the first retail
opportunity for stitchers to obtain some.
The techniques used in the project are primarily couching with a small
amount of split stitch and one french knot. It is the unusual
materials which gives the piece its highly textured look.
As part of the fund raising for this project, the Thistle Threads blog
will be allowed to show dozens of pictures of pieces in the collection
which were taken on two recent visits. So purchase a kit for a good
cause and curl up with the blog for several weeks while you work it.
