If you want to reserve a space in the course hit the subscribe button at the bottom of this page. There are currently 300 spots available based on advance materials planning. Since all the materials for this course are being custom manufactured, additional spots will be added based on availability of materials. This will bring you to a paypal page for a one time payment of $200. This is a non-refundable deposit which allows me to start ordering the materials for your kits. If you have extenuating circumstances and can not start the course, the fee will be refunded if I can fill the spot from a wait list. If I can not fill the spot, you will be due materials to the value of the deposit minus shipping.

After subscribing, send me an email at email@example.com with your name, shipping address and preferred email address for the class correspondence as many paypal accounts have husband's names or old addresses.
One month before course commencement, I will send you a link for an 18-month paypal subscription for the remainder of the course cost ($55.50/month). Your registration is complete once you start the subscription payments for the course. There will be options for payments of 1/3 every three months or payment in full as well.
If you prefer not to use PayPal, I will accept check payment ONLY if either a full payment is made or a set of post dated checks amounting to the full amount is submitted. Unfortunately I have had several bad experiences of late and have to change my policy. Email me for instructions and terms. I currently do not take credit card numbers directly.
Priority postal fees are included in the course pricing for US addresses. International students will have a choice of First Class or Priority shipping. The shipping supplement will be calculated upon the first shipment and will range for Canadian's between $17-$41 (First vs. Priority) and the rest of the world $35-$72 (First vs. Priority). Students will be sent an invoice for the class supplement upon the shipment of the first kit. Kits will be mailed only if the class payments are up to date. If your destination requires special handling by courier or Fed-Ex, I am happy to do so, email me for a quote. The first kit will be shipped in the first 1/3 of the course - depending on availability of materials.
A second course kit will be shipped approximately half-way through the course. Exact date will depend on manufacturing availability. Any kit materials missing from the course mailings will be mailed to you at my cost via first class mail as I receive any back ordered materials.
For those living in foreign countries, take note that your country may access customs on your class kits. This is especially true in the UK where the class kits will be accessed VAT of 20% on the contents and shipping costs as well as a handling fee by your post office for collecting the VAT. As I ship hundreds of kits and products a year to the UK as well as other foreign destinations, I can not jeopardize my shipping situation by marking the contents falsely. If a shipment is opened and does not match, I will be placed on a customs freeze and every package from my address for a year is opened and accessed causing a tremendous inconvenience to every customer. While some of the materials do come from the UK, they are exported without VAT and thus the country of origin does not matter. Educational materials as a marker only applies to those materials which are shipped to educational institutions.
Your paypal subscription may suspend if the credit card expiration date is passed. In these cases, I will notify you and send a new link to restart the subscription. If a month goes by without restart, your passwords will be deactivated until the subscription is restarted.
User Names and Passwords:
The first day of the course, we will send you an email with your uniquely assigned username and password as well as the link to the restricted-access course page. It is best to use a minimum number of computers to access the course materials as the database will flag accounts with logins coming from a large numbers of IP-addresses, resulting in a temporary suspension of password while a new password is assigned.
The class content will be provided in chapters in PDF format. PDF pages will be downloadable page-by-page to keep resolution at a maximum for the photographs.
As an additional warning, some users of satellite internet have trouble downloading the large number of files involved in the class as their provider will 'throttle' their use. Please check with your provider on their policy for large downloads.
Each month, when the new class content is loaded, you will receive an email with the link to the new lesson. The links to content posted in previous months will still be active and able to be printed or viewed for the entire period of the course.
This course is designed to allow maximum flexibility for the stitcher. All ranges of expertise are covered to enable someone who loves needlepoint to complete a casket to those who want to spend years covering one with stumpwork. Therefore, the wooden casket as well as covering papers and fabrics are sold separately. There are two caskets available at two different price points. My goal is to enable the broadest spectrum of budgets to participate in the course. You also have several years to decide which casket you might want to stitch and purchase it on an installment plan. Again, I am trying to accommodate all budgets. I will not be providing plans for the caskets, but will be making the metal reproduction hardware available for those students who have someone in their life who insists on building them their casket themselves.
Cabinet of Curiosities Part 2 Kits:
There are two kits for Part 2. The course kits will be filled with special threads and wires needed for stumpwork. No fabrics will be provided, it is assumed that the student will use some fabric on hand for practice and then apply the techniques they are interested in to their casket work. The following is a sample: Soie perlee and gobelin in the historic color line, gilt silk purl, striped silk gimp, silk braids, mica, stumpwork forms, silk covered wire, metal threads and trims, etc.
Can I Take Part 2 before finishing Part 1 or Instead?
This course will assume the information given in Part I and will refer to a number of the licensed photographs in Part I to illustrate concepts or show more examples of a particular technique. There will be historic photos in Part 2 which will support the Part 2 information so it is possible to take the courses out of sync or not take Part I; but understand that some of the time extra photographs referred to may not be accessed as they were licensed for Part I only. That said, the courses are otherwise designed to stand alone as much as possible.
A Note on Course Practicalities:
There are always concerns raised on ability to complete a lesson before the next is posted. These courses are at YOUR pace. Needlework shouldn't be stressful - it should be an enjoyable experience. In the extreme case, you can print the content and put it in the course kit and place it aside for a few years (I have done that myself with other online classes - set aside for when my kids are older). It is your choice to get what you want out of the content. I give you permission to never finish the project but enjoy the process and information for what it teaches.
There are no requirements to send the completed project back to me (please don't). If your only experience for distance learning in the past was EGA correspondence courses and you enjoy the feedback - send me a picture or scan and ask questions, I will be happy to give you some feedback.
The course material will be additive, meaning the new month will be added to the last. So you don't need to worry that you might miss getting the material off the site by a certain time each month. A few months after the course completion, we will send out an email letting you know when the course materials will be removed from the site, giving you time to print out or download anything you may have missed.
A Note on Course Sharing:
In order to provide historic information and photography to enhance the course materials, Thistle Threads has needed to enter into licensing relationships with museums that require payment based on the number of views of the material. We are required to provide the institutions with print outs of the login files to establish use payments. If there is sharing of the login and passwords by students with non-students, then Thistle Threads will not be able to afford to work with the institutions for such access. Therefore, we have put a more sophisticated login system in place to enable us to track individual usage and to reassign login credentials if necessary to prevent unpaid use of the materials. It is for this reason that some of the materials are print-only from the website as well. We hope that you understand why these limitations have been put in place and appreciate that it is so we may bring a richer experience to the course by using extant materials to educate. This is new territory for most institutions and has taken significant negotiation to establish, we hope it will be a good experience for them and us so that we may expand such opportunities in the future.
